The museum as an institution occupies a central place in the history of Western civilization. In a historical perspective the museum is a place for preserving the collective memory, where the everyday and spiritual life of a community is unfolding before our eyes.

Our collections have within the historical past two major sources. One of them is the local history and the other one is founded by the archaeological exploration of the region. The basis of the historical collection are local historical monuments from the 2nd half of the 19th century until today.

Another great collection unit which is one of the main research profile of the Museum is the ensemble of archaeological findings. The museum collection and research area covers the full Nógrád county, and the fundaments are mostly based on unearthed relics from the 1950s and '60s.

One of the most important tasks of the museum besides the collection and the preservation of the different types of objects is the analysis and exhibition of these. A concious collecting work started first in the fifties when skilled and educated archaeologists began to work for and at the museum.

The Museum, which gives place for historical collection, is the youngest institution of the Organisation of Museums in Nógrád County. The museum has a thirty-year-old history — the first exhibition was opened in 1975.
